세계기자대회 참석차 방한한 짐 보멜라 회장은 16일 박근혜 대통령에게 보내는 공개서한에서 “한국 언론인 17명은 정부의 언론에 대한 정치적 개입에 항거하는 파업을 이끌었다는 이유로 해고된 상태”라며 “새 정부는 해직 언론인을 복직시키고 언론의 독립성과 자유를 회복하도록 투명한 사장 선임 절차를 구축하는 등 조속한 조치를 취해야 한다”고 강조했다.
이어 짐 보멜라 회장은 뒷걸음 치고 있는 한국의 언론 상황에 대해 깊은 유감을 나타냈다. 짐 보멜라 회장은 “IFJ와 전세계 180개 소속 조직들은 이명박 전 정부가 한국 사회와 정부에 대해 비판적인 입장을 취하는 기자들과 프로그램들을 막기 위해 친정부 인사들을 언론사 사장으로 임명한 것에 대해 우려를 표한다”고 말했다.
또 보멜라 회장은 “편집권 독립은 한국 민주주의의 미래에 중요한 사안이라는 데 동의를 표한다”며 “언론자유를 수호함으로써 한국 언론인의 권리와 국민의 이익을 보장하려는 한국기자협회의 노력을 지지한다”고 덧붙였다.

Your Excellency,
I write on behalf of the International Federation of Journalists to strongly urge you to intervene to secure the re-instatement of journalists dismissed at YTN and MBC. According to our member union in Korea, the Journalists' Association of Korea, 17 journalists remain dismissed by these companies following the actions taken last year by their unions to protest alleged political interference in the media by government.
The IFJ and its 180 member unions worldwide expressed concern at the time over the actions of the then-President Lee Myung-bak in appointing pro-government individuals as presidents of national media organisations, with orders to cut programs and reports that were critical of Korean society or the government. Journalists who were then considered to be overly critical of government were transferred to other departments or just summarily dismissed.
We hope that your new administration will endeavour to repair the damage done by re-instating the dismissed journalists to their previous jobs, and take urgent action to restore freedom of the press and media independence by establishing a transparent system for electing company presidents, including the removal of YTN president Bae Seok-kyu and the swift election of MBC president.
We agree with our member union, the Journalists' Association of Korea, that editorial independence is crucial for the future of democracy in Korea and support their effort to ensure the rights of Korea's journalists and the interest of Korean citizens by upholding the principles of press freedom.
