‘낙하산 사장 반대투쟁’을 벌이고 있는 YTN의 사태 해결을 촉구하는 국제사회의 목소리가 이어지고 있다. 국제기자연맹(IFJ)에 이어 두 번째다.
국제사회의 언론 자유를 수호하는 활동을 펼쳐온 민간 국제기구인 세계언론위원회협회(WAPC, World Association of Press Councils)는 11일 YTN 사태와 관련해 성명을 발표하고 구본홍 사장의 퇴진을 촉구했다.

협회는 성명에서 “우리는 이명박 대통령과 가까운 관계를 갖고 있는 구본홍 씨의 YTN 사장 임명이 편집권 독립을 훼손하고, 정부의 언론 통제라는 망령이 살아날 수 있다는 YTN 언론인들의 견해에 동의한다”고 밝혔다.
이어 WAPC는 “구본홍 씨의 사장 선임을 무효해 편집권의 독립을 보장하고 YTN 공적 신뢰성을 회복시킬 수 있도록 새로운 인사를 지명할 것”을 촉구했다.
WAPC는 국제사회의 언론 위원회 협회 조직으로 미국, 인도, 터키, 아제르바이잔, 방글라데시, 케냐, 말라위, 네팔, 북키프로스, 스와질랜드, 탄자니아, 우간다, 잠비아, 짐바브웨 등에 위원회를 두고 있다.
YTN 노조의 한 관계자는 “국제기자연맹(IFJ) 성명이 나온 뒤 다수의 국제 언론단체에서 YTN의 실태를 확인하는 문의가 있었다”며 “추후 관련 국제단체 등에서 성명이나 입장 발표가 잇따를 것으로 예상하고 있다”고 전했다.
앞서 국제기자연맹(International Federation of Journalists)은 지난달 13일 성명을 통해 구본홍 사장 반대투쟁을 벌이다 해고 등 중징계를 당한 YTN 노조원들의 징계를 철회할 것을 촉구한 바 있다.

WAPC EXPRESSES CONCERN FOR EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE AND JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY AT YTN SOUTH KOREA
YTN is a 24-hour cable TV news channel, headquartered in Seoul South Korea. Founded 15 years ago, it has grown to become a major media company in this short time. 60% of its stock is held by the Korean government.
Since July of this year, YTN journalists have raised serious questions concerning the appointment of Mr. Ku Bong Hong, former aide to President Lee Myung-bak, as the new head of YTN. Central to these concerns is the editorial independence of the media.
The WAPC agrees that the appointment of Mr. Ku, who has a close association with President Lee, raises the specter of government control. We note that even the appearance of bias in this regard serves to destroy the public trust in news media. With all due respect to Mr. Ku, we urge that his appointment be rescinded, and that a new appointee be found that will guarantee editorial independence, and restore public confidence in YTN.
